In the modern era, people are always looking for new methods to keep themselves healthy by exercising and choosing the right diet. However, this task is not as easy as it sounds with all the contradictory information online.
For this reason, I decided to write this article and share with you the most effective workout routine that offers a myriad of health benefits, but no one seems to be talking about it!
If you’re not familiar with isometric exercises, here’s a quick definition:
An isometric exercise is a type of muscle training that doesn’t involve the shortening or the lengthening of the muscular fibers. In other words, the muscle is stagnant in one position while under tension.
In this article, we will briefly cover the benefits of isometric exercises, then list our top picks to help you stay healthy and reap the most out of each workout session.
The Benefits of Isometric Exercises
Faster metabolism
Unlike cardiovascular exercises, isometric training substantially increases the basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is attributed to a boost in muscle activity. (1)
For those of you who haven’t heard of BMR before, it is a metabolic parameter used by clinicians, nutritionists, and personal trainers to estimate the number of calories the body needs per day to maintain the function of internal organs.
This number is subject to several factors, including age, gender, degree and type of physical activity, body type, muscle mass, and diet.
Unfortunately, a decrease in BMR is associated with weight gain, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and a decline in bone mineral density.
Improved strength and muscle mass
While it’s commonly known that any type of muscle strain will result in hypertrophy, most people do not realize that isometric training is superior to conventional lengthening and shortening of the muscles.
In a 2004 study, scientists compared the degree of muscle hypertrophy response to isometric, eccentric (lengthening), and concentric (shortening) exercises in similar session durations.
They found that muscle mass increases in the following percentages:
- Isometric exercise – 14%
- Concentric exercise – 12%
- Eccentric exercise – 11%
These results suggest that isometric exercises increase muscle mass and strength more than other types of resistance training.
Fat loss
Isometric training is a fantastic tool to burn that extra fat around your abdomen and love handles.
This workout burns calories in two ways:
During exercise
When your muscles are strained, the body starts burning calories to keep up with the increasing demand of myocytes (muscle cells).
In the beginning, the process is aerobic, which means oxygen is utilized to burn calories in the cell, using both the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. (2)
Once the exercise gets more intense, it is impossible for the body to keep burning calories in the aerobic fashion since it takes too long.
Instead, anaerobic caloric expenditure begins, which does not require oxygen. (3)
Regardless of metabolic pathways, isometric exercises are on top of the list when it comes to energy expenditure. For instance, the plank position –a type of isometric exercise– burns up to 5 calories per minute. (4)
Post-exertional fat loss
This is one of the best features of isometric training!
During the training session, muscle fibers will inflict microscopic tears that need repairing to accommodate future exercises.
For this reason, after you finish your workout, the liver and skeletal muscles will burn calories and fat to repair the damage. This process takes 3-4 days, depending on the intensity of the workout. (5)
Contrast this with cardiovascular training, where all caloric expenditure occurs during the exercise itself.
The Best Isometric Exercises to Get a Full-body Workout
After covering the potential benefits of isometric training, we will list 5 exercises that will keep you healthy. Of course, you still need to watch out for what you eat.

- Begin in a push-up position, with your hands placed directly beneath your shoulders.
- Engage your core, and straighten your body so that it forms a straight line from your heels to the top of your head.
- Hold this position for as long as possible. Ideally, you would aim for at least 30 seconds to start with. After a while, increase the duration to make the exercise more challenging.
2. Wall Sit
