Sacroiliac joint dysfunction typically causes lower back and/or leg pain. Leg pain can be challenging to differentiate from sciatica-like radiating leg pain caused by a lumbar disc herniation, as symptoms are very similar. Today it is estimated that the sacroiliac joint is responsible for 15% to 30% of lower back pain cases.
The sacroiliac joint consists of the pelvic bone (ilium) and the sacrum, the triangular bone between the lumbar spine and the tailbone (coccyx). Primarily, the sacroiliac joint serves to absorb shock between the upper body and the pelvis and legs. The sacroiliac joint has very little motion, and it is reinforced by strong ligaments and soft tissue surrounding it to assist with absorbing pressure. The Gluteus Maximus and Piriformis muscles also support sacroiliac joint function.
The Most Common Signs & Symptoms of Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
- Dull, aching lower back pain ranging from mild to severe (typically felt on one side)
- Radiating pain into the hips, buttocks, and/or groin.
- Sciatica-like pain that feels sharp, hot, and stabbing with possible numbness and tingling
- Stiffness and decreased mobility in the lower back, hip, pelvis, and groin
- Worsened pain with weight-bearing on affected side, such as stair climbing, running, or jogging
Aggregation of the sacroiliac joint can result in inflammation, causing sacroiliitis. This condition may be the primary cause of pain, stiffness, and other symptoms.
