De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a painful condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Rotating the wrist, grasping objects, or simply making a fist are all movements that will cause pain. The specific cause of de Quervain’s tenosynovitis is unknown, however any activity that relies on repetitive hand or wrist movement can make it worse. De Quervain’s tenosynovitis affects the two tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Tendons are ropelike structures that attach muscle to bone.

The Most Common Signs & Symptoms of De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

  • Pain or swelling near the base of the thumb
  • Difficulty moving the thumb and wrist when gripping or pinching

  • Direct injury to the wrist or tendon, causing scar tissue
  • Body fluid retention especially during pregnancy and menopause
